PROGRAM NOTES
Double Vision for two quintets and piano is one of several works of mine written in the 1970s (e.g. Ensembles for 17, Concerto Piece for Piano and Orchestra) the formal aspect of which is determined to a considerable extent by the choice of instrumental forces. Here, the participating bodies—a woodwind quintet (with two clarinets), a brass quintet (with two trumpets), and piano—interact in a variety of ways, with further subgroups and combinations continuously emerging, exploring not only timbral aspects of the chosen ensemble, but also some of the dramatic and gestural potentials inherent in it. The form of the work can be described roughly as a set of six variations without a theme. Double Vision, however, is not without its themes; but rather than being introduced at the outset, they become apparent and crystalize only as the work unfolds.
